Safiul Azam Data & Information Management

About

Seven years turning field data into operational decisions

I am a data and information management professional based in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, working in the Rohingya refugee response — one of the largest humanitarian operations in the world. Since 2019 I have been a Registration Assistant with UNHCR, under DIMA (Data, Identity Management and Analysis).

My work covers the full data cycle: collection, cleaning, preparation, analysis, modelling and visualisation. In practice that means querying a 1.2 million-person registration dataset in SQL, building Power BI dashboards that senior management and government counterparts rely on, and developing Power Platform applications that have replaced manual tracking across eight registration sites.

I did not arrive at data through a computer-science degree. I came to it through training — I founded and ran an IT training centre in Cox’s Bazar from 2015, and coordinated a national digital-skills programme for the Government of Bangladesh’s ICT Division in 2017. Teaching several hundred people to use tools well turns out to be excellent preparation for building tools other people have to use.

More recently I completed an MSc in Data Analytics and Design Thinking for Business (CGPA 3.9), alongside Harvard’s CS50x and CS50 SQL. The MSc capstone — a demand-forecasting system built with Random Forest and delivered through Power BI — is written up in full on this site.

Working with refugee registration data means data protection is not an afterthought. It shapes what I build, what I publish and how I talk about my own work — which is why you will find no operational screenshots anywhere on this site.
